Do these steps with NO POWER on machine.

How to Check your Vector Drive

 

Find a digital multimeter:

 

Set meter to Diode Check Scale

  • Disconnect wires from terminals 1, 2, 3 (R, +, -) on vector drive.

  • Make sure to insert Red Lead in V+ socket and Black Lead in Common socket of meter.

  • Place BLACK LEAD on Terminal 2, check with RED LEAD to Terminals 4, 5, 6 (Should measure OL) and 
    9, 10, 11 (Should measure .3V -.7V).

  • Place RED LEAD on Terminal 3, check with BLACK LEAD to Terminals 4, 5, 6 and 9,10, 11. 
    (Should measure .3V -.7V)

  • Place RED LEAD on Terminal 1 (R) and BLACK LEAD on Terminal 2 (+). 
    (Should measure .3V -.7V w/o charging)

  • Place BLACK LEAD on Terminal 1 (R) and RED LEAD on Terminal 3 (-).
    (Should measure about 1.3V or "OL")

 

How to Check your Servo Amplifiers

 

Find a digital multimeter:

 

Set meter to Diode Check Scale

  • Disconnect wires from terminals 1, 2, 3 (R, +, -) on vector drive.

  • Make sure to insert Red Lead in V+ socket and Black Lead in Common socket of meter.

  • Place BLACK LEAD on bottom terminal (+H.V.), check with RED LEAD to Terminals A, B, C (Should measure .3V -.7V).

  • Place RED LEAD on 2nd from bottom terminal (-H.V.), check with BLACK LEAD to Terminals A, B, C
    (Should measure .3V -.7V).

How to Check your Regen Resistors

 

Find a digital multimeter:

 

Set meter to Resistance Check Scale

  • Disconnect wires from terminals 1, 2, 3 (R, +, -) on vector drive.

  • Measure the twisted pair of wires (Black and White) that go to Regen Bank on top of electrical cabinet.
    Should measure 5.5 ohms - 12 ohms, depending on the number of elements in Regen Bank.

  • Measure from White Wire to Machine Ground.  Should show "OL" on meter Display.

  • Visually inspect wires for pin holes, worn spots, or any compromise of the wire insulation

  • Visually Inspect the Regen Bank for contamination such as metal chips or coolant.

Once you receive your newly repaired vector drive, you should check a few simple HAAS Vector Drive troubleshooting factors afterward to ensure your drive and CNC machine work as well as they should.

After you receive your drive back from being repaired, take a look at your motor cabling and the spindle motor. A visual check of the cables—both power and encoder—will ensure that there aren’t any burnt pins, cuts, or twists in the cable. Once you have done a visual check to make sure everything looks good, you will want to use a multimeter to ring out the cables; this ensures that there aren’t any short wires inside the cables. Once you finish this step, you should megaohm your motor power cables to double check that they’re insulated. We recommend doing this, as well as megaohming your motor, before reinstalling your drive to ensure that both the meter and megaohm lead to the ground. Sometimes, the motor cables or the spindle motor itself cause the issues that spindle drives have, which is why you should check over these potential issues before reinstalling anything to your machine.

In most CNC machines, specifically HAAS machines, the spindle drive connects to the servo amplifiers; these do not have a lot of prevention circuitry, so they may have problems after your drive has been repaired. Make sure to check over the servo amplifiers when HAAS vector drive troubleshooting. Certain versions will come with an alarm light that will indicate when you have an issue; to check this, you will need to make sure that your drive powers on and off without any alarms going off.

Following these HAAS vector drive troubleshooting checks will help to ensure that your machine runs smoothly and efficiently after a repair has been made on your vector drive.
